The Vichy Legacy: From French Markets to Our Homes

The Vichy Legacy: From French Markets to Our Homes

Recently I have been drawn to the quiet power of a simple check. To the untrained eye, Vichy (or gingham, as it is often called) might seem humble, a pattern relegated to kitchen curtains or summer picnics. But to those of us who value the Countryside Chic aesthetic, the Vichy check is a masterpiece of refined restraint.

As an artisan and a curator, my journey with this pattern began with a fascination for its duality. Vichy was originally the fabric of the people—sturdy, honest, and unpretentious. Yet, it didn’t stay in the pantry for long. It eventually found its way into the grandest French estates, where it was embraced for its ability to soften the formality of a stately room without losing its sense of order.

How It Feels

In my workshop on the island of Saaremaa, I find myself returning to this "Vichy Legacy" constantly. When I was designing the Spring in the Countryside collection, I wanted to capture that specific moment where the pattern transitions from "countryside" to "chic."

Take our Céleste cushion, for example. In a sky-blue check, it reminds me of the airy freshness of spring. White piping adds some visual interest as well as quirkiness.

The Fabric

The beauty of the Vichy legacy lies in its versatility. In the French provincial style, it is often paired with raw wood and wild greenery. Yet I suggest to elevate it by paring the Olivier sage check with rich leathers or the Atelier, beige & neutral, with antique gold frames.

As the person behind the sewing machine, I am not just making a cushion; I am continuing a tradition of "slow living" and bringing back the patterns that seem forgotten in commercial home decor. I choose fabrics that have the ideal weight and drape, fabrics that will endure stress but also ones that feel inviting and soft to the touch.

Ideas

We live in a world of fleeting trends, but the Vichy check remains.

Some of the pieces in my Spring in the Countryside collection are meant to be used as a pop of color. Others are meant to be mixed and matched, however you like. I'm sure you'll find something that suits your home perfectly.
